Diabetes Prevention & Management for Ethnic Minority Communities

People from ethnic minority backgrounds are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes and often at a younger age. Research shows that some groups, including people with South Asian, African, and Caribbean heritage, have a higher genetic and metabolic risk, meaning diabetes can develop even at lower body weights. Lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and access to healthcare can also increase risk. The good news is that with the right knowledge, healthy habits, and regular monitoring, diabetes can often be prevented or effectively managed.

Hi, I’m the voice behind this blog. My journey with Type 2 Diabetes began on 18th September 2025 after a routine blood test revealed something I wasn’t expecting my blood sugar levels were dangerously high.

Despite having a family history of Type 2 Diabetes, I didn’t fully understand what the diagnosis meant at the time. The day after my consultation, a fasting blood glucose test at home showed a reading of 26.6 mmol/L. After advice from my family, NHS 111, a pharmacist, and finally my GP, I went to A&E where my diagnosis was confirmed.

That moment became the turning point in my life.

This blog is where I share my journey of learning to live with Type 2 Diabetes navigating the confusion of a new diagnosis, exploring treatments and technology, and taking control of my health. My goal is to document what I learn along the way and hopefully help others who are starting their own diabetes journey.
